Solid Wood
Alder – A Hard, strong wood that seasons easily, works well, is easily stained to imitate walnut and mahogany.
Anigre – Creamy in color with a slight pink tinge, this African hardwood has been a popular choice for high-end furniture. Its texture varies from medium to coarse. It most often has a straight grain, but the grain can also appear to be wavy. Anigre wood is naturally lustrous and polishes beautifully.
Ash – A lightweight and durable hardwood with a light cream to medium brown natural color and a straight grain pattern.
Bamboo – A fast-growing, sustainable material with a satiny texture and smooth grain.
Grain – A term that describes the pattern that natural occurs throughout the pulp of the wood.
Kiln Drying – Lumber is dried to reduce the weight, stabilize the wood, increase the strength and prevent twisting and staining.
Knot – A portion of the wood where a stem or branch once grew from the larger trunk, creating a darker feature in the grain of the wood.
Mahogany – A strong wood with a uniform structure and close, open grain, mahogany is comes in many different varieties. It has a light pink to yellow natural color that turns reddish brown with exposure to light and air. Mahogany is a favorite for woodworking.
Oak – A durable hardwood with a light natural color and silvery grain.
Rubberwood – This sustainable, fast-growing wood from Asia is frequently used for furniture. Rubberwood is naturally pale yellow, with an open grain similar to mahogany. Rubberwood is environmentally harvested, using the latex sap for decades, and harvesting the wood only when it has stopped yielding sap.
Shisham – A strong hardwood grown in India, it is valued in the furniture industry for its attractive wood grain, durability and elasticity.
Shisham is least likely to crack due to changes in temperature.
Teak – An extremely dense and durable tropical hardwood, teak has been used throughout history for shipbuilding, furniture making and general construction.
Veneers
To maintain our commitment to the environment, and to keep our furniture economical, Style in Form uses wood veneers in some of our product construction.
Laminate – A product made by bonding layers of wood and other mate als to a substrate.
MDF – Medium Density Fiberboard is an engineered wood product formed by combining wood fibers with wax and resin and applying heat and pressure. It is used as a substitute for particleboard, solid wood, and plywood.
Veneer – A strong surface overlay of hardwood over a base wood or composite.
Wood Finishes
Stain – Similar to paint in its composition, wood stain is designed to transport the pigment directly into the wood, rather than creating a film on the surface.
Wenge – A colored stain designed to resemble the dark wood of the wenge tree.
Caring For Your Furniture
Here are a few tips to ensure that your new furniture stays beautiful for years to come
- To clean the surface of your wood, use a lightly dampened, soft cloth with mild soap and water and then wipe the surface dry. Do not use window cleaner as this will damage the surface of your wood.
- Keep your furniture out of direct sunlight to avoid discoloration.
- Do not place hot or cold dishes directly on the surface.
